Blabber Mouth : BIG NO NO

I assume everyone has their own secrets hidden in them, with friends and among other people. Most of them may ruin the reputation of a person and some may just be plain little secrets to keep each other entertained... A secret is very hard to keep specially among close friends. Spilling the beans may lead to an ugly fight especially with girls... Believe me, I've seen my girlfriends fight because of one simple issue... Good thing I wasn't part of it.... lol...

I was actually stuck in the middle of my two close friends. I didn't know what to react or say because I didn't want to take sides.. One kept bugging me while I was watching a movie, telling me all this stuff like, "parang tinraydor ako shee... Alam naman niya kung ano ang feeling.......... What did I ever do to her... blah blah blah...." And the other one saying "Buti nga tinanong ko siya if totoo ung chismis... I never told anyone... Concerned lang ako.. Nabalitaan ko lang from my aunt that there's this girl telling all these stories about her... blah blah blah...." Well, of course I couldn't react much, didn't want to be unfair to the other one... I kept my word... Keeping that secret between us girls... :)

But then the issue got big causing all these arguments... almost ended up ruining their friendship... I say its normal for us girls to have these kind of issues, we all know that... But just relating this story or experience with my topic for my blog explains the "chain of confidentiality" which should only shared and discussed between the physician and the patient involved.

The chain of confidentiality should always be kept in the minds of the physician. One wrong move with a patients results, releasing it to the wrong person or wrong manner may ruin your license as a physician. The results should always be between the patient and physician and should never be released over the phone. The physician should always provide the patient with an appointment to release and give the results of the test taken.

Extreme care and confidentiality is required especially with a test performed in relation to a legal situation that may ruin the reputation of a person. This may lead to complications with the career of the physician also. Improper release of results may put the physician and patient involved, in situations where there will be confiscation of the laboratory test results which will become evidence of the test. And then leading them to court where there will be cross-examinations, tests, interviews, etc... At the end, the results are no longer confidential as it's supposed to be.

And as for the medical technologist, they are never to interpret the results of the tests. It is not their job but the physician. Their job is to only do the laboratory procedures and come up with reliable results of the tests. The medical technologist are not responsible in releasing laboratory results to patients. We may lose our license by doing this... Don't want that to happen, do we? :)

REALITY CHECK, PEOPLE!

Drug testing before admission in school??? Well, looking at the positive effects on the school and for the students, yes, I may say it should be required. The reputation of the school will be maintained as students are being admitted..... but once the student shows negative results in drugs and is accepted for enrollment doesn't mean that he's going to be a drug free student his whole stay in school. There's so many ways students these days get through without getting caught. The importance of knowing the value and morality in life should always be kept in mind... Except the fact that our parents also became our teachers, where can students learn these values, where can they be taught?? ....School right?

Why keep education for "acceptable drug free" students only?? Every person has the ability to change and learn. In fact, everyone has the right for education. So why keep it away from others?? Is it just to keep the reputation of the school?? That such a lame reason if so.. What about the students who show positive results in drug tests?? Are they just rejected for admission just like that and stay as a bum at home?? Those students might even become more an addict as a bum at home than how he was as a student. For me, it's not practical to reject a student from enrolling because of taking drugs. We don't really know what the student is capable of sharing to reality and life in school grounds. There may be a lot of consequences accepting a student who takes drugs but there may be a lot of things that student can learn from and even share to others...

What if a student is addicted to, let's say, uhmmm, marijuana, pot, weed or whatever they call it.. Yeah, being an addict isn't not good at all. But considering the fact that he's actually a student willing to learn, We don't know.... They may be graduating with honors, with high aims in life. Would he just be left out because of a simple drug test?? Admitting that student for enrollment may even help him even more to reduce his addiction to pot until he can live a clean life.

REALITY CHECK! The youth today?? Is very LIBERATED than before. Isn't it??? Drugs in this world is not the worst issue in life.
Though drugs may bring harm to others and may even influence the innocent but schools should never reject a student.. Education is for learning... Just think how will these students learn their lessons in life, its value and morality if the school itself can't even accept the reality that the world today is growing and getting even more aware of things that surround us.... Education may even guide those students to the right path in living life.. Actually it should... If it doesn't, the education you call is doesn't serve its purpose.. So for me, I think drug testing should not be required. Or if ever it is, the school should never reject a student willing to learn just because of that reason. The school should even give more attention to those students and help them out in these issues, right? Everyone knows education is really important in life... And it shouldn't be taken away from someone who has the right to learn.....

OVERDOSE or SUICIDE??

I actually don't remember myself experiencing any bad side effects on drugs I have taken up. I am very sure I have never encountered any overdose, toxicity or any severe reactions of drugs in my body... I don't even like taken medicine... lol..... But I do know someone who has encountered this..........

One Monday morning, as I was waiting for my next class, I received a shocking message. At first I thought it was just another one of those crazy pranks my friends tried to pull off. So I did not bother asking... The message said "Please pray for the soul of........ May he rest in peace......" But after a few hours, messages were coming in - same ones asking for prayers for our dear friend's soul to rest in peace.... Then one of my closest friends called and confirmed that he did pass away that morning... As I can remember, he died around 4am that day...
The story of his death at first was very controversial among people close to him and people who knew him... His family wanted to protect him by stating that he was overdosed.. Where in fact, the true reason behind it was he was on drugs and had some hallucinations which lead him to committing suicide.. Friends who were sleeping over at his place, found him hanging right outside the hallway of their rooms which leads to the living room... At that time, it was shocking news to hear that he has actually died. A very happy go lucky person died at an age of 21... Yes, we admit he was an addict, addicted to different types of drugs like Valium, Ecstasy, Marijuana, etc.... But that night, they said he has taken so much of these drugs...
The drugs' side effects reacted on him, giving him to hallucinations, paranoia, depression, etc... Those are just short term effects towards the body... But for long term effect, it causes damage to the parts of the brain involved in memory and thinking.. But it never came to our minds that he would push the limits... But if you would really know his background, he is a very problematic person deep down inside which may have also pushed him to suicide. And what may have also triggered these depressions, paranoia, and hallucinations may be due to the drugs he had been taking..  But despite all his problems in life, so many people had loved him for his "wackiness" attitude..... To see the people who attended his wake and burial was very heart warming for the people very close to his heart...

Well, this is a true story of a friend I did know... A friend who will be cherished by many people... Some people who may be reading this may relate to this story and may even guess who this wonderful crazy loving 21 year old is....... May his soul rest in peace.....

HCG POSITIVE!!! =)

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin.....That's what you call it! This is a glycoprotrein hormone produced in pregnant women....Amazing how it is produced right after conception by the embryo, huh??? Without even feeling a thing. HCG or Human Chorionic Gonadotropin is produced by cells which form the placenta...hmmm... You do know where we are going, with this, right???? The doctor asking the lady in a worried way while she sits down, all confused and scared - what this all means and what the doctor may say.....But! To her surprise, she was congratulated with a friendly hug from the doctor while he says "You are now a mother...Congratulations!" The lady who just came in for a regular check up, went home with mixed emotions of happines, nervousness and excitement...

On her way home, she thought of ways on how to announce the great news to her family, friends and of course the future father of her baby. As she entered their front door with a big smile on her face, she immediately called for her husband and found him sitting on the couch with a can of coke in his right hand and a bag of chips on his lap while he watches the basketball game.... She then sits on his lap, giving him funny smiles as her husband looks at her with confusion... She says "It's the hCG love!" The husband still stuck in confusion, wondered....what in the world is hCG???? Is it a prize she won or something??? But then he figured, if she went out to play binggo or something, she would have taken him along.......

She then says wearing that big smile of hers, "We're having a baby!" The husband so speechless and filled with joy just said "WHAT???! Why didn't you just say that! instead of all that hCG thingy...." The wife stuttering because of so much excitement and joy just laughed at him and pulled out the pregnancy test kit with the positive results.... This is the hCG thingy I was saying... Hmmm, well not the exact thing but this is it! It's all in here!

"HCG was detected through my urine.... It is actually detectable around the 11th day after conception and increases untill the 8th to 12th week of pregnancy. That is actually its peak and it will really show strong results....So with the color of the results, our baby may actually be around its 11th week right now...... well... thats what the doctor said.... =)" says the wife..

"It's so amazing how they made these test kits to work with this hCG stuff just to find out if I have someone living so far down, deep into my own Atlantic ocean.... my tummy.... hehe.... Imagine how this test makes the colored anti-hCG-colloidal conjugate complexes to the hCG found in my urine.... Wherein if I am found to be a mommy, the color would appear as pink.... Like this one! So simple and complex the same time..... =)"

Since that very day, the couples took regular check ups to make sure it is not another one of those false alarms because it was also known that hCG may also be found in the presence of hydatidiform moles, miscarriages, even ectopic pregnancies which may also give the same result.....positive.....

MY BABY PORKCHOP......& HORMONES????

Porkchop!! My baby puppy. =) These past few days, I've been spoiling him with so many treats, wondering what my little Porkchop would enjoy playing with and of course, what food suites best for him. I've even been trying different flavors of dog food. If Porkchop gives me an ugly feedback, its obvious that he doesn't like it.... I guess its a trial and error type of thing. And for sure, there will be adjustments to keep things balanced....... just like hormones, keeping the body balanced - adapting to the changes of the environment (what we call homeostasis). Hehe...

Although Porkchop is still new to me, I already notice if he would feel hunger or would like to play. One time, while I was wiping the drops of water as I was washing the dishes - Porkchop chased the rag i was using to wipe the floor. That gave me a sign that baby Porkchop wanted to play. =) After I cleaned up the mess, I, right away, grabbed the time to play with my cuddly puppy which gave him a positive feedback for baby Porkchop.

Soon, I noticed Porkchop got tired and just laid down, flat on the floor like those rugs rich people put on the center of their living room. I figured he got hungry because of the playing and chasing around. Just imagine, chasing a ball back and forth my apartment for maybe an hour or even more.... Who wouldn't get tired doing that?? hehe... I then took his bowl and made noise with it. To serve as signal to Porkchop and if he reacts to the noise and comes up to his bowl, for sure it means he's hungry. Without surprise, he was hungry! Haha..

Here, I realized that the tapping of the bowl on the floor or the signaling of food for Porkchop represents the hormones in our body. I was sending a message to Porkchop and Porkchop actually understood. =) Going back to hormones, we all know their found in the body. And understanding this, they are chemical signals or messengers in the body which involves positive and negative feedbacks. And if you think of it, it is so much familiar with the activities I've been doing with Porkchop for communication. In comparison, hormones are transported to one cell on to another cell while with me and Porkchop, i try making sounds (signals) to Porkchop vice versa. Together with these feedbacks, I can see and understand whether Porkchop or the body is able to adapt to the changes properly or not.

These hormones function as signals or messengers and of course with the involvement of receptors for proper communication in the circulation. The two mechanisms which involves steriods and nonsteroid hormones provide the feedbacks if the functioning of the cells to the signals respond properly. If not, as to my understandings with the nonsteroid hormone, other cells are activated by other kinds of messengers to achieve its target response. That is how it works throughout the body. Well, it may be complicating for others to understand the functions of hormones in the living body but understanding its mechanisms and just relating it with daily activities, you surely will be able to realize how simple some explanations may be. =)

ENDOCRINOLOGY, TOXICOLOGY & DRUG TESTING

ENDOCRINOLOGY, TOXICOLOGY & DRUG TESTING

Endocrinology, as i understand its definition, is the study of the body's hormones and their disorders in the body as they produce signals and help in regulation. This study involves and deals with the glands responsible for secreting certain hormones to be released in the circulatory system of the blood. The study deals with the explanation of the glands responsible in producing hormones in the endocrine system. These physicians studying this type of science are called Endocrinologists.

During our brief discussion in our first day of class in Clinical Chemistry 3, Toxicology is the study of certain chemicals which are poisonous or dangerous to the human body. These chemicals may bring harm to the body and may lead to death. Toxicology deals with different types of chemicals, reagents, solutions which may put a human's life in danger. It involves knowledge with different types of hazardous chemicals we may encounter, not only in the laboratory but may be encountered anywhere.

Drug testing, as the name implies, it deals with the testing of different types of drugs. This involves the study of chemicals present in these drugs which gives different effects to the body. In drug testing, we find out how the drug may react once taken, whether the body may benefit from the drug or if it may be toxic to the body instead. In the study of drug testing, it provides explanations on whether the drug shows therapeutic reactions or not.
